You can look at the Aura practically from edge on and the image doesn’t distort.
It also has an anti-reflective surface that works well. The panel isn’t just ultra sharp, it it does a great job with color reproduction and it has amazing viewing angles. Plugging those numbers in PPI (pixels per inch) calculator, that works out to 264 PPI -the same display density as Apple’s new 10.5-inch iPad Pro. The 9.7-inch LED-backlit panel is presented in a 4:3 aspect ratio (you can position it in landscape or portrait mode) and it features whopping 2048 x 1536 resolution. The Aura frame couldn’t be more different. And frankly, in the race to the bottom that’s resulted in $75 digital photo frames, it’s the display that has suffered resulting in low resolution, poor contrast and bad viewing angles. I want to spend some time talking about the Aura frame’s display, because this is the component you interact with -it’s going to make or break a digital photo frame. And of course you can manually pick selections on demand with the app. There is a motion sensor built into one corner and it can be used to move forward or backward in the photo queue using a hand gesture. Or, you can choose to have the frame display a new photo when someone enters the room and whenever it wakes after darkness. You can manually select intervals to change the picture selection. The Aura frame’s smart features also extend to presentation.

If your internet connection drops, the Aura frame will continue to display the locally stored photos, although the company says that if knocked offline for an extended period, it “will not operate fully.” Delete a photo from your phone’s camera roll and so long as it remains selected in the Aura app, it remains on your frame. Delete it from the app, and it's gone from the frame. Photos are also stored securely on Amazon S3 servers, giving you unlimited photo storage. But the Aura uses this local storage (they’ll only say the amount is “significant”) as a cache. But the designers went with a local/cloud combo for storage.Ĭhoose photos from your smartphone using the Aura app and they are immediately uploaded to the frame. One of the limitations that holds many photo frames back is storage, and on the Aura -which has an ultra-high resolution display- that problem could have been significant.
